What Clear Aligners Actually Are
Clear aligners are a series of removable, transparent trays — each one slightly different from the last — that gradually shift your teeth into the planned position. You change to the next tray in the series every 1–2 weeks, and over the course of several months, your teeth move. The entire treatment plan is mapped digitally before you start, so you and your dentist can see the expected final outcome before a single tray is made.
They are nearly invisible when worn, which is their biggest appeal. They are also removable — you take them out to eat and to brush your teeth — which makes oral hygiene much easier than with fixed braces.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?
Aligners work well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and some bite corrections. They are particularly well-suited to adults and older teenagers who want a discreet treatment and have the discipline to comply with the wear time requirements.
However, aligners have limitations. Severe crowding, significant rotations, skeletal bite problems (where the jaw itself needs to be repositioned), and complex multi-tooth movements are better managed with fixed braces. If you have been told you need extractions as part of your orthodontic treatment, fixed braces are usually the more reliable option. The honest answer is that not every case is aligner-suitable, and any dentist who tells every patient they are a candidate is not giving you the full picture.
Clear Aligners in Pakistan: ClearPath vs Invisalign
Two names come up repeatedly in Pakistan:
- ClearPath: Manufactured in Pakistan and widely available through trained Pakistani dentists. Quality is good — ClearPath has been used successfully for over a decade. Cost: PKR 180,000–250,000 for a full case.
- Invisalign: The international brand, manufactured abroad and imported. Backed by the largest global database of aligner cases and the most sophisticated treatment planning software. Cost: PKR 350,000–600,000 depending on case complexity. For complex cases, Invisalign's engineering advantage becomes meaningful; for mild-moderate cases, ClearPath produces comparable outcomes at significantly lower cost.
Fixed Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces remain the most versatile and reliable orthodontic appliance for moderate to complex cases. Cost at quality DHA Lahore clinics: PKR 60,000–120,000. Ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces are available at a slight premium. Lingual braces (fitted behind the teeth, completely hidden) are available at some specialist centres at a significantly higher cost.
Timeline Comparison
- Clear aligners (mild cases): 6–12 months
- Clear aligners (moderate cases): 12–18 months
- Fixed braces (moderate cases): 18–24 months
- Fixed braces (complex cases): 24–36 months
Aligners can be faster for the cases they are best suited to. But trying to use aligners for a complex case does not make it faster — it typically produces a suboptimal result that then requires refinement or braces anyway.
The Compliance Factor
This is the factor most patients underestimate. Clear aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day to work. Taking them out for meals and brushing is fine — taking them out for social events, leaving them out while you watch TV, or forgetting to put them back after lunch adds up quickly. Patients who are not disciplined with wear time get worse results than they would have with braces, because braces are always working.
If you know yourself and suspect you will not be consistent, fixed braces will give you a more predictable result regardless of case complexity.
Retainers After Treatment
Both aligners and braces require retainers after treatment — indefinitely. Teeth have memory and will move back without retention. This is not optional. Retainer costs are usually quoted separately: expect PKR 5,000–15,000 for a set of fixed or removable retainers.
