What Professional In-Clinic Whitening Actually Does
Professional teeth whitening uses hydrogen peroxide gel — at a concentration far higher than anything available over the counter — applied directly to the tooth surface and activated with a light or laser. A standard in-clinic session at House of Aesthetics takes 45–60 minutes and delivers results of 4–8 shades lighter in a single appointment. The peroxide breaks apart the organic compounds in the tooth structure that have accumulated from tea, coffee, turmeric, and general ageing — it does not bleach the tooth structure itself.
Results after one professional session are visible immediately. Most patients at our DHA Phase 6 clinic achieve 6 shades of improvement in a single visit, which is the result most people are looking for.
At-Home Custom Tray Whitening
Custom tray whitening is dentist-prescribed and dentist-supervised — it is not the same as an OTC kit. We take impressions of your teeth, fabricate custom-fitted trays, and provide professional-strength carbamide peroxide gel. You wear the trays for 1–2 hours per day (or overnight) over 10–14 days. The end result is comparable to in-clinic whitening — sometimes slightly better for stubborn staining because of the extended contact time. The advantage is cost and comfort; the trade-off is patience. You do not see dramatic results in one appointment — it is gradual.
Over-the-Counter Strips: Why They Barely Work
OTC whitening strips available in Pakistan (and imported alternatives) contain a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide — a fraction of clinical concentrations. They also cannot conform to the exact surface of your teeth, leaving uneven contact and patchy results. For patients with crowded teeth, gaps, or irregular surfaces — which is common — strips will whiten some areas and miss others. Results are typically 1–2 shades at most, and they fade faster. They are not harmful, but they are not a substitute for professional treatment if you want a visible change.
Who Is NOT a Good Candidate for Whitening
Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It will not change the colour of:
- Dental crowns, veneers, or composite bonding — these are fixed materials with a set shade. Whitening your natural teeth while ignoring existing restorations will create a mismatch.
- Intrinsic staining — grey or dark discolouration from tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood, fluorosis, or a dead/root-canal-treated tooth is internal and does not respond to peroxide whitening. These cases usually require veneers or crowns.
- Active gum disease or cavities — we always screen for these before whitening. Treatment cannot proceed safely until oral health is stable.
Cost Comparison
- In-clinic professional whitening at HOA: PKR 12,000–20,000 for a full session (both arches)
- Custom tray whitening (dentist-prescribed): PKR 6,000–9,000 including trays and gel
- Over-the-counter strips: PKR 2,000–5,000 with minimal, temporary results
For most patients wanting a genuine visible change before a wedding, event, or just for confidence, in-clinic whitening gives the fastest and most reliable result. Custom trays are excellent for top-ups between in-clinic sessions.
Post-Whitening Care
The 48 hours after whitening are the most important for maintaining results. Teeth are temporarily more porous after treatment — this is called the "white diet" window. Avoid: tea, coffee, cola, red sauces, turmeric, and smoking. Stick to: white foods, water, clear drinks. After 48 hours, normal diet is fine. Sensitivity is common for 24–48 hours post-treatment; we provide a desensitising gel and recommend Sensodyne during this period. Results typically last 12–18 months depending on dietary habits — coffee and tea drinkers will notice more rapid return of staining.
