The Common Myth: Laser Cannot Be Done in Summer
If you have asked a friend about laser hair removal, you have probably heard some version of "don't do it in summer." This is one of the most persistent myths in aesthetic medicine — and it stops thousands of Lahore patients from starting their treatment during the 6 months of the year when they want smooth skin the most.
The truth is more nuanced: laser hair removal can absolutely be performed in summer, including in Lahore's intense climate, provided the right protocols are followed. At House of Aesthetics, we treat patients year-round — including through the peak of June, July, and August — with excellent safety records and results.
Why Sun Exposure Is the Real Concern (Not Summer Itself)
The hesitation around summer laser is really about UV exposure — not the season per se. Here is why it matters:
Melanin Competition
Laser targets melanin in the hair follicle. If your skin is tanned, the surface skin also contains elevated melanin, which can compete for the laser energy. This increases the risk of the laser heating the skin surface rather than just the follicle — potentially causing redness, blistering, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), particularly on South Asian skin tones.
Increased Photosensitivity After Treatment
For 7–10 days after a laser session, your skin is more sensitive to UV radiation. In Lahore's summer, where UV index regularly hits 9–11 between April and September, unprotected sun exposure during this recovery window can cause pigmentation changes that take weeks or months to resolve.
Notice that neither of these concerns is about summer per se — they are about active sun exposure and tanning. If you can avoid direct sun for 2 weeks before and after each session, summer is perfectly safe for laser.
Lahore's Climate Context
Lahore's summers (April through September) bring temperatures of 38–46°C, high UV, and humidity in the monsoon months. However, most Lahoris spend the majority of their time indoors — in air-conditioned homes, offices, and cars. The actual UV exposure for an average urban professional is often minimal despite the season.
Moreover, many patients actually prefer starting laser in summer because:
- Wedding season peaks in October–December, so starting in May gives enough time to complete 4–5 sessions before the season
- They want smooth skin for holiday travel
- They have more regular routines in summer that make it easier to maintain appointment schedules
HOA's Summer Protocol
When you book summer laser sessions at House of Aesthetics, our clinicians follow a specific summer-safe protocol:
- Pre-treatment skin assessment: We check your current tan level and UV history. If you have had significant sun exposure in the past 2 weeks, we may recommend waiting one additional week.
- SPF briefing: Every patient receives written instructions: SPF 50 broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied every 2 hours if outdoors, for 2 weeks post-treatment. We recommend a mineral SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rather than chemical SPF for post-laser skin.
- Evening appointments: We often recommend late afternoon or evening slots in summer so patients return home without immediate sun exposure.
- Conservative energy settings: For patients with any active tan, our clinicians reduce the laser fluence slightly and increase the number of passes rather than treating at full energy — achieving the same follicle destruction with lower surface risk.
- Cooling care post-session: Aloe vera gel or a prescribed soothing cream is applied immediately post-treatment, and patients are advised to keep treated areas cool for 24 hours.
Can I Get Laser If I Have a Tan?
A light natural tan (Fitzpatrick III treated as IV) is manageable with adjusted settings. A deep tan from beach holidays or outdoor sports significantly increases risk and we typically ask patients to wait 3–4 weeks after heavy sun exposure before treating. Self-tanner products should be fully removed before treatment — these artificial pigments react unpredictably with laser energy.
What SPF Should You Use After Laser?
We recommend SPF 50+ broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen for all patients after laser, but this is especially critical in Lahore's summer. Look for labels that say:
- Broad-spectrum UVA + UVB protection
- SPF 50 or higher
- PA+++ or PA++++ (UVA protection standard used in Pakistan and Asia)
- Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients (mineral filters)
Apply 15 minutes before going outdoors, reapply every 2 hours. Even driving in a car exposes you to UVA through glass — so SPF is not just for outdoor activity.
Indoor Clinics Remove the UV Risk Entirely
It is worth emphasising: the risk in summer laser is about what happens outside the clinic, not inside it. Our DHA Phase 6 treatment rooms are fully climate-controlled. The laser session itself carries exactly the same safety parameters in July as it does in January. The only variable is post-treatment sun care — and that is entirely in your hands.
If you are committed to your pre- and post-care routine, summer is an excellent time to begin your laser journey. Use our Treatment Cost Calculator to plan your sessions and budget, or book a free consultation with Dr. Shazia Hameed to create a personalised summer treatment calendar.
